Making Basic Sentences
Now that we know a few words and the most important parts of speech such as nouns
verbs and adjectives, we can now start putting words together to make sentences!
First lets look at the things that make a basic sentence:
To make any sentence we need
1. a Subject - this is any noun proper noun or pronoun
and is the thing that the sentence will be about.
2. a Verb - the verb is the word that describes what the subject is doing or what action it
takes.
3. an Object - the object is usually a noun that the subject interacts with or uses in
in performing the action that the verb describes
These three things form what is called basic word order in English
I.e Subject + Verb + Object
There are five basic patterns around which sentences in English are built
These are:
Pattern 1
Subject + Verb
S + V
E.g John reads.
Jill eats.
He plays.
Note: any action verb can be used with this pattern.
Pattern 2
Subject + Verb + Object
e.g John reads books.
Jill eats food.
He finds money.
Note: action verbs can be used with this pattern.
Pattern 3
Subject + Verb + Adjective
e.g John reads beautifully.
Jill eats hungrily.
He finds money easily.
Note: only linking verbs can be used with this pattern
Pattern 4
Subject + Verb + Adverb
e.g John is here.
Flowers are everywhere.
No one was there.
Note: only linking verbs can be used with this pattern
and finally
Pattern 5
Subject + verb + noun
e.g She is my mom.
The men are doctors.
Mr Jones is the teacher.
